We are killing the natural world and elevating the virtual world simultaneously and willfully.

Every time I hear adults lamenting what SM is doing to children I wanna throw a rock - at an adult (including me); they’re just emulating us. What did we expect? 🤔

Any insight on electronic screen syndrome moving into adulthood when many careers are on the computer for nine hours a day?

I get the good intention behind this article. However, almost everything it says about dopamine is wrong. Policy should be based on scientific evidence, not on myths being carelessly propagated in the internet. I am a neuroscientist who is currently writing a book to dispel these dopamine myths. For example:

Dopamine does not cause pleasure.

Pleasure does not deplete the brain of dopamine, or lead to a “desensitized” state,

Social media is not addictive. It’s effects on the reward pathway (the one that releases dopamine) are the opposite of those of addictive drugs like opioids or cocaine.

Here is the evidence:

Way to point out “a problem” without providing a hint of commentary or recommending an alternative solution. How about this: grab your smartphone, pull up the camera app, and make your OWN video stating why you believe Ms. Morell’s points on dopamine are incorrect, along with the conclusions she draws. Edit it, caption it, and upload it to YouTube and let us all judge for ourselves. These scattered links, like the broken branches of some linktree leading to a website that looks like it hasn’t been updated since 2012 isn’t the solution.

Otherwise, you’re just a heckler in the crowd, part of the noise. Part of the problem really.

Sorry, I don't do video. Call me old-fashion, but I read and write. Science is still done that way. Pseudoscience, on the other hand thrives on short videos without any depth. If you are unable to read the articles I posted in my website (they are also here in Substack) in the last month (12 years ago? Give me a break!) maybe somebody with a better attention span will be able to engage with the scientific evidence I provide.

Isn't this site called Big Think, anyway?

Well clearly Ms. Morell can do both. Reading, writing, actual research, first-person, in the field—not armchair traveling inanity of the kind you seem to be accustomed. As for you, amigo, well, it’s debatable if you can do either. Writing fan fiction doesn’t impress me so much, so I won’t waste my time wading through your “links” and yogi mysticism diatribes when you don’t have even a functional stance to debate from. Ms. Morell raised concerns on lot of issues in her video, problems she tried to address, and you, sallow Sir, have offered nothing. Only that her dopamine takes are incorrect. Again, you’re just a heckler in the crowd if you can’t encapsulate a counter argument in the span of this space. And a heckler in the crowd is just a depreciating opinion if you aren’t willing to do even the mandatory minimum to explain it. Just louder. That’s all. And yeah, your website links look they’re from Blogger, circa 2012. All that reading, maybe you should learn something about typography—it’d help you out there.

Dude, take a chill pill. If you don´t like what Hermes wrote, that´s fine. Don´t read the links if you don´t want (which are not scattered, they´re in a list). No need to get so aggravated and call people names. If you think a video should be made, you do it. Also who cares if his site looks old, that´s besides the point.
